Three tamburas of different sizes, exhibited in a museum in Kazanlak — from the small djura to the large chalgiya tambura. The tambura is one of the most widespread instruments in Bulgarian folk music, especially in Thrace and the Rhodope Mountains.

The instrument has Persian roots and entered Bulgaria during the Ottoman period, but quickly became an integral part of the local musical tradition. Each size sounds different — together they create the full timbre of the folk orchestra.
