Delicate white petals with a pink-yellow heart—the Octomeria alpina orchid is a small miracle of nature, hidden among the dark roots and green leaves in the Kew Gardens conservatory. Small in size, but great in beauty.

Interesting fact: Octomeria is a genus of miniature orchids from South America, belonging to the tribe Pleurothallidinae—one of the most species-rich groups of orchids in the world with over 4,000 species. The name comes from the Greek "eight parts"—due to the characteristic structure of the flower. These miniature orchids grow as epiphytes on rocks and trees in the cloud forests of the Andes, at an altitude of over 1,500 meters. Kew Gardens is one of the few places in the world where these rarities can be seen alive outside of South America.
