🚀 The Apollo Boilerplate Command Module is something most people have never heard of — but without it, humans would never have set foot on the Moon.

"Boilerplate" capsules were exact replicas in shape and weight of the actual Apollo command modules, but without the expensive electronics inside. They were used for hundreds of tests — from parachute trials to sea rescue operations.

NASA used these exact capsules to train the Navy on how to retrieve astronauts from the ocean — a procedure rehearsed repeatedly before every real mission.

The distinctive orange color was specially applied for visibility during sea splashdowns so that rescue helicopters could find it quickly.

Behind the capsule, other historical exhibits can be seen — a true collection of US aviation history.
